If you wander by Harrison Gallery Key West in the White Street Art District and the door is locked, go ahead and ring the doorbell. Harrison Gallery Key West has been presenting the best in contemporary fine crafts, paintings, and sculpture since 1996, but the Gallery is also a working studio, and owner/artist Helen Harrison is likely busy in the back room. She will be up shortly to let you in, and you might be lucky enough to be allowed to watch as she transforms a calabash or plain gourd into a sensuous, gleaming, lushly-hued objet d'art.
Harrison’s work reshapes and reveals the beauty found in nature, and her fruits and pods are favorites among art-lovers and collectors from Key West and beyond. Often found proudly displayed in high-end restaurants as well as finely-appointed homes, her three-dimensional pieces are sculpted in wood or other natural materials and suggest a wide range of imagery from the real to the abstract. The best time to catch the latest collection at Harrison Gallery is during the monthly third-Thursday Walk on White Street in the Art District between Southard and United Streets.
