5 Brothers Key West has been an Old Town Key West classic for 26 years. A locals’ hang-out as well as a tourist stop, 5 Brothers Key West corner grocery store is the spot where everything happens and everyone stops by to find out what is happening. Close your eyes and you might think you’re in Cuba as Key West neighbors chat in Spanish and order Cuban Mix sandwiches said to be the best on the island, authentic Cuban lunch plates, and cups of husky, sweet coffee brewed from the 24 pounds of beans the store goes through every day.
Chat with owner Heriberto Paez Jr. (better known as Eddie), the son of one of the original Five Brothers. Eddie is on the scene 12 hours a day, six days a week, preparing up to 12 coffees at once and serving classic Cuban rolls piled with pork, ham, salami, Swiss cheese, lettuce, and pickles. And don’t forget to check out house specialties like chicken fricassee, empanadas, fried grouper sandwiches, and palomilla steak. Aside from the delicious food and coffee, Five Bothers is still a grocery store, and the shop is stuffed with necessities and specialties like cigars, dominoes, guava paste, rice and beans, spices, and votive candles, along with beer, and wines from screw top to French champagne. You really have to visit Five Brothers several times, but they do deliver from 7 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. daily.
