South Pointe Gallery offers a fine collection of original posters dating from the turn of the century, with particular emphasis on French posters. Each piece is hand selected with a careful eye toward design and condition. Original posters were printed at the time they were intended for use. They were meant to be hung up outside in any available space to promote anything from travel to liquor.

Key West’s South Pointe Gallery only sells original posters.

The only reason they survived until today was because they were either set aside by the printer or artist or they were stolen right off the walls.

It is amazing any poster survived since the paper used tended to be very thin. Most of the posters in this collection are stone lithographs. Stone lithography is a very difficult printing process that disappeared around WWII. A separate stone for each color was produced, and the paper was then hand pulled over each stone. The lime stones did not usually survive, since the stones were sanded down after each poster. After WWII other, more modern printing techniques were used.

Original posters are a very fun and affordable way to decorate. Not only will they bring history and culture into your environment, they are very colorful and striking. You can make a small room feel much larger by filling a wall up with a poster. They look amazing against brick or in any loft. Posters are very conversational and therefore many people hang them in their office or dining room.

Every poster in our collection is conservation mounted onto linen using an acid free wheat paste. This allows the poster to be easily handled, framed or rolled. Once the poster is framed, the linen is not visible.
